What happened?

Every key is lost

No key left to work from. This is the case where the VIN and your papers matter most.

You need a spare

One key and no backup. A spare is simpler to make while you still have a key that works.

The key won't turn

In the door. A worn key and a worn lock can both cause it.

The fob stopped working

Dead buttons, or you have to stand right beside the car.

Fob acting up? Try a new battery first.

Most fobs run on a small coin battery sold at drugstores and hardware stores. Check the old battery for its size. If a fresh battery doesn't fix it, call us.

What's inside a chip key

Most newer car keys carry a small chip in the head, called a transponder. Before the engine will start, the car checks that chip. That's why a key can be cut to fit and still not start the car: its chip has to be programmed to that car.

The blade turns the lock. The chip tells the car this key belongs to it. The buttons, on keys that have them, lock and unlock the doors from a distance.

Locksmith or dealership?

The dealership

Makes keys for the brand it sells. The car usually has to go to the dealer, which can mean a tow when every key is lost.

A locksmith

Can often cut and program car keys without a trip to the dealer. Whether that works for your car depends on the year, make and model, so ask us.

What changes the price

  • The year, make and model
  • The kind of key: plain metal, chip key or remote head key
  • Whether you have a working key, or every key is lost
  • How many keys you want

Questions people ask

Why does a car key cost more than a house key?

A house key is cut metal. Most car keys also have a chip that has to be programmed to the car, and many have a remote built in.

Is a fob the same as a key?

Not always. Some fobs only lock and unlock the doors, and a separate key starts the car.
